STEREOPONY, Japan‘s all-girl rock band, announced on Monday October 1 that they were breaking up after 5 years together. The 3-girl band consisting of Aimi Haraguni, Nohana Kitijima, and Shiho Yamanoha formed in Okinawa and got their big break on the Japanese radio rock program School of Lock! Last month, Aimi had surgery for her vocal cord polyps while Nohana and Shiho went to study overseas. When the girls got back together again, they decided to disband. They will be giving their last concert together on October 6 at Shibuya CLUB QUATTRO and will give their explanation on why they broke up sometime during the performance.
STEREOPONY: Hit Singles and Anime Theme Songs!
The band made their official debut in 2008 with the hit single “Hitohira No Hanabira,” which later became the 17th ending theme of the anime Bleach. They would follow-up their hit single with another one “Namida No Mukou” (2009) which became the opening theme for the second season of the anime series Mobile Suit Gundam 00. Other hit singles followed like ”I Do It,” “Seishun ni, Sono Namida ga Hitsyou da,” ”Smilife,” “Tsukiakare no Michishirube,” and “Overdrive.” The girls songs were often be featured on other anime series and television commercials.
Stereopony released 3 studio albums Hydrangea ga Saiteiru (2009), Over the Border (2010), and More, More, More! (2011) and were popular for touring overseas, most notably in America. They completed their Spring tour on the West Coast and last performed at the Sakura-Con in Seattle back in April.
Shiho and Nohana have announced they will continue their music careers and formed a band with Evan Taubenfield called EVANPONY. Their new single, “Just Rock with Me” will be released October 24. As for Aimi, she will pursue music in some capacity.
